How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

“I had Cat and Alex as my makeup artist and hair stylist and they were absolutely amazing!! I used them for two days (welcome party and wedding) for me, my mother, and my 6 bridesmaids. If you want a team that will be professional, high quality work, and a pleasure to work with, this is your team. First - the trial. Honestly I was blown away on my trial and knew I would book them immediately. Makeup was extremely professional, Cat asked what I wanted, style etc. She had good hygiene when using makeup products: disinfecting, using disposable brushes, setting aside used tools. Horrified to say that unfortunately this was not my experience in all the makeup trials I did. Secondly, the makeup was a full trial, not just a teaser, which again is not always the experience I had.. Cat asked what I liked and disliked and took good notes. The makeup is GOOD. It is polished and stays on well. She locks everything in and it did not budge with sweat, rain, humidity. As for hair, I was really specific that I wanted BIG hollywood curls with extensions. Alex DELIVERED!! This girl knows hair! She is quick and the hair looks EXACT to the picture I showed. I had my wedding in New Orleans so they flew out. Everything about working with them was such a pleasure and so professional. Cat was so responsive every time, easy adjustments, and the contract was straightforward. They showed up right on time and were rockstars with everyone. Case in point - it rained heavily and then was really hot. The Makeup STAYED! It seriously did not budge one bit- for me, my mom, and all the bridesmaids. Of course curls will drop a bit from rain, but my hair was still stayed curled and the extensions were so good, everyone thought it was my actual hair. My bridesmaids hair who had it braided up - everything stayed. Highly recommend for a great, high quality vendor to work with!”

“Honestly I don’t have one bad thing to say about the make up it was perfect, I loved the make up and hair it made me feel like a Barbie. I did the trial first, which I do recommend it, because we changed a few things from it for the wedding and that just made it exactly what I wanted. The reason why I’m giving it 4 stars it’s because of her not being based in Phoenix so it makes it less flexible. I asked her like 5 months before the wedding if she could remove just the hair of one of my bridesmaids because she got pregnant and wasn’t coming, and she said no because of the travel she already was counting with that money which I understood. Then for the trial, I got my date (which is hard to request specific dates with my work schedule ) and she canceled last minute ( in her favor it was a really good reason). Then I tried to book it the next month like we talked about and she had another issue and couldn’t travel to do it, so we didn’t have the trial until a few weeks before the wedding, which was okay but I just feel like I was being very flexible to someone that was not being flexible to me at all. And even though she said she doesn’t charge for travel fees, she did charge me 260 for the drive to one area in Phoenix to the venue, which I think it’s a little high (but I’ve never done this before so it might be normal). And my last complain is she told me she was going to give me a touch up kit for the wedding, and when I asked for it she gave me a used lipstick and some setting powder with no brush or sponge or anything, that did not help at all to retouch my make up after some tears. She probably just ran out of them. But like I said at the beginning I have zero complains about the actual make up and hair, it was perfect I do recommend her a lot if you live in LA, if you are out of her area just keep in mind there won’t be a lot of flexibility. (I put pictures of the wedding and trial )”

“Emily and her team were amazing! I did a lot of research before booking hair and makeup for my big day and came across Beauty by Emily and couldn’t have booked with her sooner! Starting at my trial, she made me so comfortable and even sent a prep sheet on how to best prep for this. She listened very intently to what I was saying I wanted and took the time to go through inspo photos I had saved to pick apart what I liked and disliked. After the trial, she was communicative leading up to the wedding day. On wedding day, she was very adaptable, as we had a small space to set up in and the room got very warm. They worked promptly to get my bridesmaids, myself, my mom and mother in law all pretty for the day of. Everyone’s hair and makeup lasted throughout the wind and the tears of the day. I felt extremely beautiful thanks to Emily and her team. She even included a bridal touch up kit which was so nice to have to refresh throughout the evening! Emily is amazing and so sweet and so communicative, I definitely recommend to anyone booking her!!”

“I used One Salon & Bridal for my wedding day hair and make up for me and 15 others! Everybody at One Salon & Bridal was extremely helpful and communicative!! From day 1, I felt like I was in good hands for my wedding hair and make up. The team was willing to make things work - however I needed them to work! For example, we didn't know at first if we would get ready at the salon or my venue but I was able to talk things out with Michelle and we came up with an action plan to get everybody ready in time! I was able to have a few of our close family members get hair and make up done with us, because the salon had all hands on deck for my wedding day!
