You will begin your day with Bridal preparations in our Master Bedroom Bridal suite followed by a spectacular Courtyard Ceremony. Guest will enjoy a cocktail hour with passed Hors-d’oeuvres inside the castle and in the courtyard. The festivities will continue with a Reception in our climate controlled Palladium-style Euro tent. Searles Castle at Windham offers that truly unique setting, and we’re conveniently located 30 miles north of Boston, less than five minutes from Rte.

Our story begins in 1858 when Frank Jones arrived in Portsmouth with a dream of brewing ale. Within three decades, The Frank Jones Brewery became the largest ale producer in the country. As ale production expanded, the brewery added a cooperage and scald house to clean the barrels. Workers used scalding hot rocks to sanitize barrels because soap and water would cause them to warp. Once cleaned, the barrels were filled with Jones’ signature ales. The Hawthorn now occupies this Scald House, retaining its original red-brick walls, towering beams, and industrial windows. “Cheers,” then, has a whole new meaning at The Hawthorn. When you raise your glass at your event, you’ll be toasting in a place that’s positively brewing with Portsmouth ale-making heritage and local history.

Our Club stands apart from other wedding venues because it’s nestled among some of Massachusetts’ most beautiful woodland and wetlands. Indoor and outdoor locations offer the option of an on-site ceremony. The ballroom boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, bringing views to every table at your Ipswich wedding. An outdoor terrace provides a fantastic setting for the cocktail hour, but there is also a separate indoor cocktail area for inclement weather or a winter wedding.

Our private estate is the perfect setting for a New England wedding ceremony and reception. Our coordination team and catering staff will execute your plan with grace, leaving you free to enjoy the party and mix with your guests. At Willowdale Estate, we host two wedding seasons. Our Tent Season from May-October is perfect for parties between 125-240 guests, and our Mansion Season from November-April is better suited for smaller parties between 80-125 guests inside our Estate. Long Hill is a property of The Trustees of Reservations, a Massachusetts non-profit corporation. From 1916 to 1979, Long Hill was the summer home of noted author and editor of The Atlantic Monthly, Ellery Sedgwick. He summered here with his first wife, Mabel Cabot Sedgwick, an accomplished horticulturist, gardener, and author of The Garden Month by Month, and his second wife, Marjorie Russell Sedgwick, a rare plants specialist—both of whom created a delightful, enchanting landscape, surrounded by more than 100 acres of woodland. Today, visitors delight in the beauty of Long Hill’s structured and naturalistic gardens as well as a network of woodland trails.
