## What type of honeymoon is right for you?<a id=“ask”> </a>

## Where should you go when? <a id=“where”> </a>  
This is one of the most important aspects to figure out at the start of your planning. And while we believe you can travel anywhere anytime with the right gear, you’ll want to know in advance to pack a poncho or prepare for the sticker shock of peak-season pricing. 

Our personal honeymoon planners shared Zola couples’ most-requested destinations and the best time to visit them:

### Hawaii 
Many people enjoy Hawaii as a honeymoon destination. You’ll find the best weather in April and May, and September and October; the rainiest months are from June to September (though Kauai can be rainy year-round); and the steepest room rates from December to January. 

### Caribbean 
When planning a honeymoon around Hurricane season, you need to be aware that the dates span from June 1 to November 30, but the majority of storms hit in September and October, so you can snag lower rates if you’re travelling at the beginning of the stormy months (with good travel insurance!). 

The festive season is always the busiest, with many resorts booking up a year in advance and setting 10-night minimums. The Carribean is a hot honeymoon destination, so book as far in advance as you can. 

### Mexico Pacific Coast 
Outside the mild rainy season in August and September, the “best” time to visit the popular Los Cabos region is between the crowds, so after Spring Break and before the festive season. 

### Mexico Caribbean Coast 
The Yucatan Peninsula (encompassing beach town favorites Playa Mujeres, Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum) is popular year-round, but you’ll get the best weather from December to April. There’s a brief shoulder season in late November between the summer rains and holiday crowds.

## How do you budget for your honeymoon?<a id=“budget”> </a>  
One quirk of creating a honeymoon budget and travel planning is that you don’t have to pay for everything upfront. Couples using Zola Honeymoons cover around 20% of the vacation in advance, then pay the balance closer to departure.

## Have you covered all the boring parts?
Your dates are locked in, your room overlooks the Caribbean Sea, and your monogrammed swimwear is [safely packed](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/beach-honeymoon-packing-list). Hurray. But did you cover travel insurance, check on immunizations, and think about ground transportation? Make a plan to match every fun honeymoon reservation with some life admin.

Honeymoon Planning 101: What You Need to Know

Though it’s one of the most important aspects of your [honeymoon planning](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/honeymoon-planning-101-what-you-need-to-know), asking for time off from work is often an overlooked detail that’s frequently left to the last minute. Instead, [requesting time off](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/requesting-time-off-for-a-honeymoon) from work should be one of the first steps you take toward planning for your honeymoon. Upon having this conversation with your supervisor, you’ll have a more concrete idea of how much time you’ll have to be away. So, it’s best to have this conversation as soon as possible. More importantly, there’s certainly a right and wrong way to make your time off request. ## When Should You Make the Ask? 
While there is no definitive rule for how far in advance you should speak to your boss about your honeymoon vacation, it’s best to give them as much time as possible. In some cases, you may not be able to formally submit the request form for your time off with human resources until closer to the trip, but it’s still a good idea to clear your chosen dates with your boss. 

Oftentimes, deciding when to ask your boss for time away is more about the circumstances of your unique situation, rather than a particular timeline. For example, you’ll want to have this discussion before booking any of your arrangements. While most companies and supervisors are more than understanding when it comes to weddings and honeymoons, it could prove challenging to adjust your plans, should anything go wrong. It’s also best to consider the time of year you plan to travel and what will be happening in your company at that time. For instance, if your employer puts on a large conference every fall, that may not be the best time for you to be away for two weeks. 

Similarly, it is also beneficial to consider the time of day you choose to have your conversation with your boss. If you know she is usually busy in the mornings, don’t try to talk to her right when she walks in the door. Instead, wait for a time when she is free and able to process your time off request. 

## How Much Time Can You Ask For? 
Unfortunately, this is a question with no clear answer. The amount of time you are permitted to take away from the office and [how to request time off](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/requesting-time-off-for-a-honeymoon) for your honeymoon will primarily depend on your company and its paid time off policy. If you work for an organization with a traditional paid leave policy, you’ll most likely be permitted to take as much time as you have accrued by the date you leave. So, if you have one week, you can take one week. However, if you want more time, you may be able to ask for, or negotiate, additional unpaid leave. 

If your company has a more contemporary leave policy, such as unlimited or flexible time, it may not be as clear what you can expect. In this case, consider what the norm seems to be within your organization. If you have “unlimited” time, but most employees only take a week or two off at most, consider that when determining how much time off you’ll request. 

If you plan to travel immediately or shortly after your wedding, consider the total amount of time you’ll want to be away during that period. It may be difficult for your manager to approve a vacation request of two weeks off for your wedding, and then, only a short later, three weeks off for your honeymoon. For this reason, many couples choose to delay their honeymoons at least three to six months after the wedding. Plus, by delaying your trip, you can save up your vacation days over an extended period. 

So, when you’re planning, ask yourself [how long should a honeymoon be,](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/how-long-should-a-honeymoon-be) and determine the appropriate amount of time you should request off. 

## What Should You Say? 
Once you have decided what to ask for and when to have the discussion, it’s time to actually make your request. Thankfully, this should be a relatively straightforward process, and it’s highly unlikely that your boss will deny your request if you have carefully thought through the two questions above. However, just because you’re likely to receive approval, doesn’t mean there’s nothing you should do to make the conversation easier. This can be done by putting yourself in your boss’s shoes and considering the questions that she will have so that you can ensure that she has a clear understanding of what steps you’ll take to guarantee things run smoothly while you’re away. Explaining how the operations of your department will not be impacted by your absence and knowing which employee(s) will cover you while you’re out will increase your chance of having an approved request. 

For example, if you’re managing a critical project team, you might say, “I would like to request two weeks off in October. I have already discussed coverage of my project management responsibilities with Tanya on the team, and she is prepared to step in while I am away.” The key is to show your manager that you have considered how your trip may impact the business, and you have taken the appropriate steps to minimize disruption. If she knows everything is taken care of while you’re gone, she will feel more at ease approving your request. While it can be tempting to submit your request via email, it’s best to have your initial conversation in-person. This allows your boss the opportunity to ask any clarifying questions, and makes the leave request feel more like a discussion that is open for schedule adjustments, such as shifting your days off earlier or later, if needed.

## How Can You Prepare for Your Absence? 
First, breathe a sigh of relief that the hard part of [requesting time off](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/requesting-time-off-for-a-honeymoon) is over. But, don’t relax just yet! Preparing for your time off is key to ensuring that you are able to relax while you are away. Start by setting expectations with your colleagues, manager, and anyone helping to cover you while you’re gone. This may include training another employee on certain aspects of your job, such as making sure that he or she knows where to access specific information or paperwork, and understands pertinent details for any customer-facing projects or work. 

The more care you take in making these preparations, the more you’ll be able to unplug while you’re away. Think about everything you do throughout your workday and write down information as you go. In some cases, it may be worthwhile to create a document to house all of the details of your daily schedule. Start taking these notes a few weeks prior to your departure so that you can review them with relevant colleagues closer to your leave time. 

Once you have set all expectations and shared all relevant information and paperwork, the last thing you need to do is put up an out-of-office reply on your email and/or phone line. This helps you, and those covering you, by notifying anyone who tries to contact you of your absence. A key element of this away message should be sharing whom people should contact while you are gone. In addition, stating when you’ll be responding to messages is a great way to continue setting expectations. For example, your out-of-office reply may look something like this: 

*Thank you for your email. I am away on my honeymoon from October 14 to 29. During this time, I will not be responding to any messages, and you can expect a response upon my return on October 30. If you require assistance in the meantime, please reach out to colleague@company.com.* 

This short message clearly sets the expectation that you will not be responding to emails during your honeymoon, while also redirecting anyone who needs help before you return.

The more steps you take to let them know you’re truly going to be out of pocket, the less likely it is they’ll try to reach you. And the easier it will be for you to disconnect and relax on your honeymoon.

## Keep everything you need in one place.
Chances are, you have a lot of things you need for your honeymoon stored on your phone, tablet, or laptop (like your reservation confirmations, for example). If you have to search through your email every time you need something, though, you’re more likely to get sucked into distractions, like work emails or social media notifications.
 
Instead, organize everything you’ll need for your honeymoon in one, easy-to-access place. You can create a folder on your phone—or, if you really want to avoid the phone trap, you can print out any necessary documents and keep them in a folder in your luggage. 
 
Old school? Yes. Effective? Also yes.
 
## Turn off notifications.
You don’t need to know every time someone sends you an email, comments on one of your photos, or invites you to a game of Candy Crush. It’s going to be hard to unplug, chill, and be present for your honeymoon if your phone is pinging every five minutes.
 
So, turn off all your notifications. ## Minimize distractions on your phone.
Turning off notifications is a great start. But the truth is, your phone has plenty of other ways to take you out of the moment on your honeymoon—if you let it.

If you know you’re prone to digital distractions, take precautionary steps to remove as many of those distractions from your phone as possible: 
- Turn your phone on airplane mode when you’re relaxing with your partner, out enjoying a delicious meal, or having fun on an excursion. 
- Temporarily disable your web browser.

How to Actually Unplug on Your Honeymoon

Ah, the honeymoon. After saying, “I do,” couples look forward to spending time together relaxing after a busy time of planning. Although many newlyweds head to resorts, [cruises](https://www.zola.com/shop/category/cruise-lines), and snowy chalets, the rise in road trip honeymoons is nothing to ignore. And don’t let your thoughts turn to mishaps portrayed on the big screen in National Lampoon and Thelma and Louise. ### What is a road trip? 

Essentially, a road trip involves using a vehicle to travel from place to place. It’s as simple as that! So, why are road trips increasing in popularity with honeymooners? Taking an RV trip ensures that you have a clean, romantic space wherever you go. Plus, they are unique and can be [easy on the budget](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/honeymoon-fund-101).

## How to Choose Where to Go on a Road Trip Honeymoon

Some couples decide to start and end their journey near their home. If you’ve always wanted to explore the next state over, that’s entirely possible. You can even use your vehicle to do so. However, if you live on the east coast and have always had Colorado on your bucket list, then do it! It’s common to [fly to a destination](https://www.zola.com/shop/category/airline), rent a vehicle, and then take a road trip.

Also, road trips can be diverse, depending on where you stay. Some road trippers like to choose a route and stay in a different place each night. Others enjoy using a single location as their home base for a few days. That way, they can fully explore an area before moving on to the next locale.

Either option is acceptable. However, decide what type of road trip you have in mind and what to do at a destination. These elements will factor into the amount of time you need to spend in an area. 

It’s also highly recommended that you book your overnight stops ahead of time. Wandering from place to place at your leisure seems romantic. Consequently, if you can’t find a site for your vehicle for the night, it can be anything but ideal.

Also, be sure that it’s legal to stay where you wish. Instagram abounds with images captured from campervans by the beach, but do your research. It may not be permitted to park your vehicle in some locations for the night. A late-night knock to receive a ticket or move your RV isn’t what honeymoons are about, either. 

## What types of RVs are good for road trips? 
How you get around is determined by your budget and the type of trip you have in mind. Nonetheless, the term RV is a broader term that encompasses a whole host of transportation underneath. Instead of getting bogged down with specific classifications, here are a few styles of RVs for your honeymoon road trip. 

- __Motorhome__ Breaking down the term motorhome into its two parts—motor and home—defines RV type. Motorhomes have an engine and allow the passengers to be in the living quarters while on the road. 
- __Travel Trailer__ A travel trailer is pulled by an SUV, pickup truck, or another vehicle rated for the trailer’s specific weight. A modification is the fifth wheel, which is the trailer style that hooks into a pickup truck bed. Fifth wheels often have sleeping quarters over top of the truck’s cabin. 
- __Campervan__ Sleepervans are roughly the same size as a traditional van, although some are taller and longer. Campervan rentals are like mini hotel rooms on wheels. They have all of the necessities included in an easy to drive vehicle.

A word of note is that although you don’t need a particular driver’s license to operate an RV, having some experience goes a long way in having a successful honeymoon. Larger vehicles and trailers, which can jackknife, can be challenging to maneuver, park, and back into campsites. Don’t add extra stress to your trip by renting an RV that you or your partner can’t handle with ease. 

## Things to Consider When Planning a Road Trip

### Determine how long you will be on the road.
Perhaps the most significant factor in planning your trip will be the [amount of time](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/requesting-time-off-for-a-honeymoon) you have to spend. Flying to Arizona to see the Grand Canyon may not be worthwhile for only a few days. If you can only allot a short time, consider staying close to home. Whether you have time for a cross country road trip honeymoon or only have the weekend, a journey is possible. 

### Consider where you want to go.
A road trip honeymoon is a perfect time to immerse yourself in a [region of the country](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/honeymoon-planning-101-what-you-need-to-know) you haven’t explored. For example, a west coast road trip itinerary can include surf in San Diego, sight-seeing in Los Angeles, wine-tasting in Santa Barbara, trekking hiking trails in a national park, and experiencing the beautiful Cannon Beach along Oregon Coast. Some of the most romantic road trip ideas include beaches, [mountains](https://www.zola.com/expert-advice/mountain-honeymoon-destinations), and beautiful scenery. However, including culture, history, and a few major cities can add variety to your trip. Think about what you and your partner like to do, and build a journey from there. 

### Choose your type of vehicle. 
As far as ease of driving, the smaller, the better—especially since it will just be the two of you. Save the big RV for when you have a family in tow. Therefore, take the opportunity to do a campervan rental or pull a small, vintage-style travel trailer. 

### Plan rest days.
Think about it. You’ve spent months perfecting minute details for your wedding, and you will finally be on vacation with your significant other. Although you want to see sights and experience a new area, don’t get bogged down by filling every moment. Get some much-needed rest, and incorporate some downtime to read, relax, and do other honeymoon-centric activities. *ahem*

### Pack light and plan to re-wear items. 
Are you one of those people that has to wash their jeans with every wear? If so, get ready to let go a little bit on your road trip! One good thing about moving from place to place is that you will only encounter your spouse multiple times. Wearing clothes twice or washing them in the RV and hanging them to dry can help you pack light. Plus, chances are you won’t be doing much that requires dressing up. Although you may want to take one outfit for a nice dinner out. 

### Divvy up your duties. 
Before you leave, decide on who will do what. Figuring out little things ahead of time, such as who pumps gas and who keeps track of toll money, will help your trip go more smoothly. Although one spouse will likely do most of the driving, talk about when—and if—the other will take over. You may also want to factor in a bit of nap time when you switch drivers, too. 

### Have a road trip kit.
Your RV will come with a few emergency supplies, such as a spare tire, which you hopefully won’t need. However, pack other things, such as snacks and drinks, so that you can stay nourished. Packing other essentials, such as a first aid kit, flashlight, and ibuprofen can help avoid unnecessary stops.

Based on how much time you have between your wedding and vacation, here are things you should do before going on your honeymoon.  

## If you have a week or less before your honeymoon...

### Gather all your items from the venue.

### Get your dress cleaned and return suits.
The sooner you get your dressed cleaned, the better—especially if there are sweat or food stains on it. If you’re leaving on your honeymoon right away, pass your dress to a family member or maid of honor to take to the cleaners. Depending on the design of your dress, you may need a speciality cleaner, so do your research before the wedding to determine where you want it dropped off. The last thing you want is to return home to a dirty wedding dress.

### Pay your vendors.

Second, once you bid a price, there’s no way to go back and alter your number. If the airline accepts your bid, your money is taken directly from your account or credit card on file. So, be sure that you’re sure about your amount and that you have the money available to front the cost if you do get lucky.

## Check prices 24 hours beforehand. 
If business class is looking a little lonely, airlines may dramatically dip their prices for flight tickets. In the company’s mind, a flight is taking off whether or not business class seats are filled. To hopefully avoid the sunken cost, though, airlines will sometimes reduce the price of business class seats to earn some extra money last minute.
