Beautiful Venue, But Frustrating Coordination
Where do I begin? First, the Colony Hotel is a beautiful location, and I don’t regret getting married here. The hotel holds a lot of nostalgia for my husband and his family, who’ve been staying there for years. Initially, the pricing was great, which made it a strong contender among other venues. However, be aware that prices increase depending on which spaces you want reserve (each room is a different space), and as it’s a hotel, privacy can be an issue. For example, during our cocktail hour, some hotel guests were on the ocean porch, and others were peeking over the rails during our ceremony, which was slightly concerning. Now, to the disappointing part. We toured the hotel in March 2024, and from then until my wedding day, I dealt with three different coordinators. The second coordinator left at my 45-day check-in, and the new one was unprepared, rushing to gather details. I had to repeat everything I’d already discussed with previous coordinators, up until 3 days before the wedding. Additionally, our plans for welcome drinks and the farewell brunch, which were confirmed months prior, weren’t honored. The issue with the welcome drinks and the brunch situation dragged on until the week of. These were all things we had already discussed with the hotel, and it was frustrating to be told one thing, only to have it changed. Mind you our guest were already told these details and they had rsvp'd for them. My advice: hire your own coordinator if you’re getting married here. Mine (foreveryjoccasion) was amazing in managing the stress and handling the hotel staff. By wedding day, I was so done with the hotel coordinators, despite them trying their best. And I was empathetic to the situation but I had reached my limit. To add to the frustration, during check-out, I was treated rudely by a staff member at the front desk. When I requested a cart to bring my things to the car, I was told no with zero thought or hesitation and only got assistance after explaining it was for check-out. Thankfully, the reservations manager, Mike, was much kinder. I also reached out about missing items I had brought for the wedding decorations but never received a response. Even after following up, I got no reply, which added to the feeling of not mattering now that I wasn't paying for a service. Overall, the hotel is beautiful, and the bartenders and servers were great. Our guests had a wonderful time. But if I had to plan another event, I would be hesitant to deal with the hotel’s management and coordination team again. However, you might be dealing with someone different.
Exceeded all expectations - Magical Day!
Growing up in Kennebunkport we had high expectations for our wedding at The Colony. Of course, the venue speaks for itself as the perfect backdrop for any wedding. No one will question that The Colony offers the best grounds and views for a wedding held in Kennebunkport. Our wedding was 130 people and the lawn (ceremony), front porch (cocktail hour), and ballroom (reception) were all great spaces for our guests. Our wedding day far exceeded our expectations and was truly a magical day for us, our family, and our friends. What truly set this experience apart was our wedding coordinator, Nicole. Her dedication, creativity, and organization made the planning process seamless and enjoyable. She went above and beyond to ensure every detail was tailored to our vision. On the big day, we felt well prepared, and Nicole orchestrated everything flawlessly, allowing us to focus on enjoying each moment without any stress. We cannot thank her enough for the work put in to making the day perfect! Also of note, the food and drinks were exceptional, and we still have friends and family raving about the meal several months after the event (we went with the buffet option). We will happily recommend The Colony to anyone looking to have their special day in southern Maine!
Perfect Wedding!
Based on previous reviews of weddings at the Colony, we lowered our expectations for wedding day but stuck with the venue as it is stunning, large enough for all of our guests, and in our preferred location of Kennebunkport. Our wedding exceeded expectations and was PERFECT, other than the cloudy day. Nicole is the best! Since we started planning over a year ago, there have been three different wedding coordinators at the Colony and we are SO grateful that Nicole was the one with us in the final months and on our day. She really executed every little detail of our day to make it perfect. Nicole provided such great insight and recommendations, a testament to her years of experience. The Colony is lucky to have her! Of course we could not have had such an amazing wedding weekend without the wonderful staff at the Colony. We are seriously blown away by all of the hotel staff and the staff on the day of, they were extremely prompt, professional, and helpful to make our vision come alive and stick to our requested timeline. The chef and kitchen staff were able to serve 190 entrees in 20 minutes, incredible! The food was also delicious, we received several compliments about the appetizers, entrees, late night food, and morning after breakfast. Most of our guests stayed at the Colony and found the rooms lovely and comfortable. The new Coveside rooms provided a great option for guests seeking more modern accommodations.
